According to a tracking survey by the Commonwealth Fund, about one in four adult Americans went without health insurance for at least a period of time during 2011. The report said 26 per cent of those surveyed said they experienced a gap in their coverage and 41 per cent of those people had previously been covered by an employer-sponsored health plan.

The main reason for low-income families to go without coverage was due to the cost of health insurance. A total of 62 per cent said they couldn’t find health insurance at an affordable price while 31 per cent stated they were denied insurance, had an exclusion clause put in their policy, or were charged higher rates due to a pre-existing medical condition.
It didn’t come as much of a surprise when the survey said most people without insurance were more likely to go without preventive health care services including cancer screenings, blood pressure tests and cholesterol checks.
